Digital Services

Digital services are those most associated with on demand work. Think of the classification as you, the business owner, being paid to do something for someone else. Digital services can be offered in any field and are most often associated with freelancers and on demand work.

Though there are overlaps in the fields and types of work between digital products and services, the main difference is that services are active while products are static. Services are more commonly 1-1 where you trade time for money rather than repeatedly selling the same thing. Services can range from coaching to creative work and even administrative work.

Digital services are not for everyone, but they do have their advantages. One of the most appealing advantages would be the remote aspect of digital services. No longer do you need to be in the same city in order for people to reap the benefits of your services. The remote capability not only allows you to work from where you want, but it also allows you to gain clients from all over the world, if you so choose.

Digital services also offer variety in who you work with and for. The flexibility in digital services allows you to choose which projects you want to take on and the clients you feel are best suited for you as well. With this flexibility, there is inherently more control over your schedule and hours. While choosing your clients, schedule, pay, and projects seems extremely appealing to most people, there are cautions to be taken with this choice too.

Offering a digital service comes with more of a hustle because instead of offering a product, you are offering yourself and talents. Approaching business from a service approach requires you to be on top of your game because the reviews and feedback you receive will be mostly about how you interacted with the client and how you delivered. That being said, when strategized correctly offering a digital service can be a great path to starting a new business and building your repeated clientele.

Design

Because you will be offering a by-case service, your design process isn’t going to be as repeatable as with a digital product. Instead, your design phase should be more about creating detailed customer communication policy. Especially in delivering services, the quality of the customer experience can quickly turn negative if key expectations are not stated. Communicating your personal process with your service will allow your customer to be kept in the loop as you are working for them. It is also important to discover what your best approach is when seeking feedback. Oftentimes, service oriented jobs will require feedback and approval at multiple stages. Identifying clear and concise language for what the customer needs to approve and provide feedback on will help ensure a smooth process.

Develop

The development process with a digital service is going to be dependent on a case by case basis with your current client. For deliverables, you should make it an established practice to set checkpoint dates with your client. On these checkpoint dates, establish exactly what you need from your client so that your project can continue to move forward. If your service is more lesson based, the development process is more of a give and take with the client to make sure your approaches are effective. No matter what service you are providing, development should be about making sure your work is in line with the client’s objectives and expectations.

Deliver

Because the digital service sector has more interactions with clients through the development process, the deliver phase focuses more on customer experience practices. For ideal collaborations, you want to make sure you are timely in your delivery and reliable in your word. Once your creation or service is complete, make sure the client has everything they need in order to utilize your work effectively. You also want to be mindful of how you collect your payment. If you are working through a freelance platform, this will be taken care of for you. If you are offering services individually, then you want to make sure you have a variety of payment options. Not everyone will have a Venmo or Paypal account. You want to be sure you are making the process as easy as possible for your clients.

In the lesson application of services, development and deliver phases can happen simultaneously. Since you are teaching a skill, the delivery will be in the content you are teaching and your ability to communicate that well. Best practices for delivery of your knowledge include patience, adaptability, and a supportive nature. Keep in mind that everyone learns differently and has different needs. It is up to you to make sure you can meet those needs. The same practice for deliverable payment applies to lesson based services as well. Give your clients multiple options for payment to make the transaction easiest on them.

Types

Freelance for Self

Finding contractors for certain jobs online has become abundantly popular within the last decade. Companies and individuals are realizing that it may be in their best interest to hire outside help on a limited basis. For this reason, if you have an area of expertise and enjoy working with others, you may want to take advantage of using one of these platforms to connect you with clients. Freelance jobs can range from online marketers to translators to writers and so many more. The opportunities for freelance jobs seem endless on these platforms. If you don’t already have a client base, joining a freelance platform is a great option to build your experience and clientele.

Freelance for Agency

While there are platforms that are simply a hub for freelance opportunities, there are also agencies who specialize in one skillset or another. An agency like Crowdcontent brings on copywriters and then assigns them to jobs. Other similar agencies are within audio transcription, medical transcription, academic research, closed-captioning, and other remote services. The advantage to joining an agency is that they will assign projects to you versus submitting proposals on freelance platforms.

Virtual Assistant

If you are skilled in administrative duties and organization, you may want to hone those skills within the virtual assistant realm. Thanks to advanced technology and softwares, more and more people are turning to virtual assistants to complete administrative tasks. Freelancing as a virtual assistant is a great way to utilize administrative skills while having the freedom of choosing clients and time commitments that complement your needs.

Lessons/Coaching

For people whose strength is working with people, offering lessons or coaching virtually in your field of expertise is a great way to use your strengths and expertise without the confines of a particular company. This type of digital service requires the most flexibility as it will require you to adapt consistently with different personalities. Those who have had extensive coaching experience or have been former educators are particularly adept at offering these kinds of virtual services. As all fields look for consultants, coaches, or instructors, the demand is high for this type of digital service.

Next Steps

If you have decided that offering a digital service is the best approach for your business model, then your next important decision is how you will go about finding your client base. Particularly specific offerings may be better suited for organic awareness. However, if you are offering your services associated with commonly known jobs, freelancing platforms or agencies may be the best place to get you started. That being said, you will still always want to base your approach on what separates you from others who also offer the same service. Return to your value propositions and then determine the path that will allow you to showcase those best.
